CAST

The Cultivating Arts & Students Together (CAST) programs at Proctors, Cultivating Arts and Students Together – career training and volunteer program!

This program offers opportunities to learn about volunteerism in the professional theatres at Proctors, Capital Repertory Theatre or Universal Preservation Hall. CAST members participate in a training session and volunteer during several performances during the Proctors, theREP and UPH season. The CAST program gives high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to fulfill community service credits while being close to the best shows the Capital Region has to offer at the region’s premier theatres: Proctors, theREP and UPH. Help house management, welcome patrons and have an opportunity to go to the show! Spaces fill up quickly, so be sure to encourage students to submit their applications early.

Training

CAST members participate in a two-hour training session in the fall. All staff and volunteers are required to be full vaccinated for COVID-19 at least 14 days prior to the training session. Participants will meet members of Proctors/theREP/UPH staff, learn about the role of the House Manager, Production Manager, stage crew and more. They will go on a backstage tour of the theatre to learn about its history, what happens to prepare for and during performances. They will meet some of the key volunteers, learn about the various volunteer positions and learn about what they will be doing on show nights.

Performance night

CAST volunteers are responsible for scanning tickets and usher for our live performances. At Proctors, students are expected to volunteer for at least one performance of every Broadway tour production, in addition to a minimum of other performances. At theREP students are expected to volunteer for a minimum of three performances of each production within season. At UPH students are expected to volunteer for a minimum for six performances per season. Students may then stay and watch the performance or are permitted to leave following scanning.

Parental / guardian involvement

It is our goal to keep parents informed of assignments and schedule changes. Therefore, a parent or guardian must accompany the CAST student to the annual meeting at the beginning of each season. Parents/Guardians are also expected to pick their student up at the pre-arranged time and must come inside the building to get their student. Alternatively, there is a waiver that can be signed allowing the student to leave the premises without a parent/guardian. Additional information will be provided at the pre-season meeting.
