2010-2011
Student Matinees
Welcome to our Student Matinee Series at Capital Rep. When we revitalized this program in the 1995-96 season, there were only 17 schools participating. Last season, the theatre's Education Programs served over 24,000 young people!
We hope that we have been able to enrich the work teachers do in the classroom through the performances and personal interaction between the students and the people who put on the plays. Thanks to everyone that has participated, the suggestions and feedback of the groups in the past has been a great help in expanding the program.
Capital Rep is committed to the education of young people. Our matinee prices are subsidized by the City of Albany and the Times Union to allow for a more affordable student ticket price. Post-performance discussions with our Artistic Director and cast have been a mainstay of our program. We have developed a partnership with the Capital Region Center for Arts in Education to help teachers integrate the performances into their classroom studies. Our Classics on Stage series produces literary works each season that were chosen with school curriculum in mind.
Our matinee schedule is planned around school holidays and we have a Snow Day cancellation policy so we can be as flexible as possible and ensure that students are influenced by the theatre. Teachers can take their students to performances during the school day to enrich their lives through theatre. Call Sue Gaffney, Education Reservation Specialist to reserve tickets or for a brochure on our 2009-2010 season at (518) 462-4531 x220.
We hope you will join us as part of the upcoming season at Capital Rep!

Nominated for five Tony Awards, 33 Variations combines drama, music and memory in a play about passion, parenthood and the transformative power of beauty. At the end of his life, Beethoven obsessively wrote 33 variations on a theme by Anton Diabelli - an act that has baffled musicologists for centuries. In 33 Variations, present-day musicologist, Katherine Brandt attempts to unravel Beethoven's towering obsession. As her journey progresses, her own obsession with genius - and her own legacy - is unveiled.

By Donald Margulies
November 10, 2010 at 10:30 am
Recommended 8-12 Grades
Prepare to be astonished! When Louis de Rougemont's youthful voyage upon the high seas was cut short by a typhoon, he was marooned on a Coral Sea island, made contact with Australian aborigines and found an unlikely home. There he rode giant sea turtles, observed a monstrous man-eating octopus and flying wombats, and tamed the "savages" with his display of gymnastics. In Shipwrecked! the adventurous de Rougemont shares his fantastical story of bravery, survival and celebrity - overlooking the lines between fact and fiction, but never failing to entertain.

As he does, he encounters more than his share of seasonal snafus including an exploding furnace, taunting by the school bully, a tongue stuck on a frozen flagpole and a hilarious Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant. A Christmas Story will leave you smiling from ear to ear.

These lessons are designed to meet the teachers' educational concerns and lend insight into the performance. Cost is determined by the number of participating teachers and students in the school.
